Science Can’t Wait

A Statement from Michelle Chamberlain, Salk VP of Advancement

The federal government has shut down pending passage of a full budget. For independent research institutes like Salk, where more than half of our funding comes from federal grants, this uncertainty delays decisions, stalls planning, and constrains opportunities for discovery.

Across the political spectrum, there is strong bipartisan support for life sciences research. Every family, in every community, has been touched by cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, or chronic illness. Scientific research is critical to improving the health of the American people, driving our nation’s innovation economy, and maintaining global competitiveness. Yet important questions remain unresolved: Who will shoulder the cost of sustaining breakthrough research? How will limited federal dollars be allocated? Which areas of discovery will receive priority in the years ahead?

Science can’t wait.

Salk scientists are currently working on life-changing discoveries because of a combination of federal investment and private philanthropy—a partnership that has powered critical research for decades.

Salk is not a university. We do not have tuition dollars or state funding. We are an independent, nonprofit research institute solely focused on science. We are careful stewards of every dollar we receive and share our discoveries openly for the benefit of all.

Thank you for standing with Salk in this critical moment by:

Together, we will continue to advance bold science, inspire hope, and create a healthier world for generations to come.
