For Industry

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is committed to engaging with industry as part of its mission to ensure that technologies are brought to the market for the benefit of society.

Salk’s reputation as one of the world’s leading research institutes comes in part from its success in advancing the understanding of diseases that cause great human suffering. This understanding has led to revolutionary changes in the treatment of many diseases, has paved the way for major classes of new drugs, and has fundamentally shaped the direction of research aimed at the development of new drugs and therapies. Some especially notable examples include the identification of tyrosine phosphorylation and the discovery of hormone receptors, which together form the basis of a large proportion of the world’s pharmaceutical compounds. Other discoveries include new compounds for treating neurodegenerative diseases, obesity, diabetes and infections; novel approaches to probing patients’ biomarker signatures; and cutting-edge imaging solutions for following the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) staff is eager to discuss with you how engagement with Salk can have a major impact on your company’s competitiveness and productivity. Most commonly, our industry partners engage with Salk as licensees of patented technologies or tangible materials. Other partners are collaborators with Salk faculty or are sponsors of research. The OTD is here to facilitate whichever approach is most appropriate for your company.
