This month’s image comes from a recent press release from the lab of Salk scientist, Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte. The paper, published in 细胞 shows that the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool can be modified to activate genes temporarily, without breaking DNA and causing unintended permanent damage. This is considered epigenetic editing, and the team used it to improve the health of mice with kidney damage, a form of muscular dystrophy, and type 1 diabetes.
