The Romeros To Perform at “Symphony At Salk”

La Jolla, CA – The classical guitar family, the Romeros, will perform with the San Diego Symphony, under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak, in a concert under the stars Saturday, August 25 at this year’s “Symphony at Salk.”

The performance, a partial benefit concert for The Salk Institute, marks the sixth concert of this annual summer event at Salk. The sunset performance to be held in the Institute’s Gildred Courtyard, begins at 7:30 p.m., with preconcert tours of The Salk Institute beginning at 5 p.m., and a box supper, starting at 6 p.m.

Ticket prices are $75 for the concert and box supper, and $150 for preferred seating with the supper.

“Symphony at Salk is a wonderful occasion for longtime Salk supporters and those who are new to the Salk to get together and enjoy good music under the stars,” said Betty Vale, event chair.

The Del Mar-based Romero family has performed for more than three decades and represents one of the only modern examples of classical music passed down from generation to generation. The quartet, which has played with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world, has also performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, at Carnegie Hall, at the Hollywood Bowl. Their music also has been heard by two American presidents at the White House, by Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain, and his Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.

Internationally renowned artist Françoise Gilot-Salk is once again honorary chair of this popular Salk concert. Gilot-Salk’s artwork provides the event’s visual theme. Commemorative posters featuring this year’s monotype will be available the night of the concert at the Institute’s gift shop.

This year’s program includes: “El amor brujo: Ritual Fire Dance,” by Manuel de Falla; “Concerto in D,” by Antonio Vivaldi, with guitar solo by Celino Romero; “The Gardens of Granada,” by Federico Moreno Torroba; “Concierto Iberico,” by Federico Moreno Torroba, with Pepe, Celin, Lito and Celino Romero, guitars; “Capriccio Espagnol,” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Introduction and Fandango,” by Luigi Boccherini, (from guitar quintet No. 4); “Fiesta en Cadiz,” by Pepe Romero; “La Boda de Luis Alonso,” by Jeronimo Gimenez; and “Noche en Malaga (Malaguenas),” featuring Pepe, Celin, Lito and Celino Romero.
