The Initiative started as a bold idea that continues to guide all of Salk plant science research: We can enhance plants\u2019 natural traits to solve global problems.<\/p>\n<p>Salk research is now leading the way in removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil, where it contributes to healthier ecosystems, increased crop resiliency, and more sustainable agriculture. HPI comprises two bold programs:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row blocks pl-0 pr-0 pt-0 mt-0\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-6 pl-md-0 pr-md-25 mb-sm-50 \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/harnessing-plants-initiative\/meet-the-scientists\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/HP-Web-icons-03.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crimson l\"><strong>CO<sub>2<\/sub> Removal on a Planetary Scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The CO<sub>2<\/sub> Removal on a Planetary Scale (CRoPS) project is developing Salk Ideal Plants<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, which puts CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the ground and keeps it there. By increasing root mass, depth, and amount of suberin\u2014a naturally occurring plant tissue that loves carbon\u2014Salk researchers have transformed wheat, rice, corn, and other crops into carbon-storing machines. In addition, longer roots and more ground carbon mean farmers also benefit from improved drought tolerance and soil health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/scientist\/wolfgang-busch\/\">Wolfgang Busch<\/a><br \/>\nHPI Executive Director<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 col-md-6 pl-md-25 pr-md-0 \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/science\/power-of-plants\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/HP-Web-icons-01.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crimson l\"><strong>Coastal Plant Restoration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Wetlands store as much as 100 times more carbon per acre than dry land, but they\u2019re disappearing fast. As they erode, wetlands release carbon, further complicating our atmosphere and environment. Salk\u2019s Coastal Plant Restoration (CPR) project is developing wetland plants that hold carbon, purify water, preserve land, and can thrive in challenging environments around the world.
