The prize honors \u201cthe most outstanding plant scientists working on both genetics and genomics in the present era.\u201d It is named after distinguished plant biologist Barbara McClintock, whose work in maize genetics earned her the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/womenwhochangedscience\/stories\/barbara-mcclintock\" target=\"_blank\">1983 Nobel Prize<\/a>\u00a0in Physiology or Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Ecker is a professor and director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory at Salk, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and holder of the Salk International Council Chair in Genetics. Since then, his lab has generated many critical genomic atlases, including his 2025 publication of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/scientists-debut-a-new-foundational-atlas-of-the-plant-life-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\">first to span the entire Arabidopsis life cycle.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ecker\u2019s work has also revealed more intricate details about plant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/plant-cells-gain-immune-capabilities-when-its-time-to-fight-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\">immunity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/all-drii-ed-up-how-do-plants-recover-after-drought\/\" target=\"_blank\">drought recovery<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/superior-photosynthesis-abilities-of-some-plants-could-hold-key-to-climate-resilient-crops\/\" target=\"_blank\">evolution of modern photosynthesis<\/a>. These insights can be used to pinpoint genes that help plants adapt to environmental stressors, such as disease or extreme weather, which scientists can then work to enhance in vulnerable species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than four decades, Joe Ecker has pushed the envelope of modern genetics,\u201d says Salk Nonresident Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/salk-institute-names-plant-geneticist-detlef-weigel-as-nonresident-fellow\/\" target=\"_blank\">Detlef Weigel<\/a>, PhD, who received the McClintock Prize in 2019. \u201cThe greatest service, however, to plant biology has perhaps been that Joe has leveraged his technical acumen and ingenuity to become a leader in the field of human brain development, by revealing the enormous diversity of brain cell types at both the genetic and epigenetic level\u2014thereby teaching the scientific community at large how important lessons from plant genetics and genomics are for human biology and health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ecker has repeatedly been named among the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/seven-salk-scientists-named-among-most-highly-cited-researchers-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">highly cited researchers in the world by Clarivate<\/a>, and has led or participated in many prestigious collaborations, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/salk-scientists-receive-12-9-million-from-nih-brain-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Institutes of Health BRAIN Initiative<\/a> \u548c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/news-release\/salk-institute-among-cross-collaborative-teams-gifted-220-million-by-wu-tsai-human-performance-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance<\/a>. He has also received other recent honors like the 2024 Arabidopsis Community Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2024 Ilchun Molecular Medicine Award from the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
