Mitchell Chair, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Goulding is a neuroscientist who studies the sensorimotor circuitry in the spinal cord that controls a range of different motor behaviors, from simple reflexes such as scratching to walking and precise forelimb movements. \r\n<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_42665\"  class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive wp-image-42665 size-pr-300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Martyn_Goulding_551A7109-300x450.jpg\" alt=\"Martyn Goulding\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martyn Goulding<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Martyn_Goulding_551A7109-scaled.jpg\">Click here<\/a> for a high-resolution image.<br \/>Credit: Salk Institute<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\u201cWe are proud to congratulate Martyn on this honor, one that he shares with some of the world\u2019s most accomplished leaders, not only in the sciences but also business, education, the humanities, and the arts,\u201d says Salk Institute President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/scientist\/gerald-joyce\/\">Gerald Joyce<\/a>. \u201cMartyn has helped define what it means to \u2018move\u2019 as a human, and his work helps inform the development of treatments for conditions in which movement is impaired, such as Parkinson\u2019s disease, ALS, and spinal cord injuries.\u201d\r\n<\/p><p>\r\nBy developing new genetic strategies, Goulding identified and characterized many of the neurons in the spinal cord that are required for movement. Among his many accomplishments, he discovered the types of neurons that guide alternating stepping during walking, influence the speed of locomotion, and direct flexion-extension\u2014a fundamental feature of movement in animals with limbs.
