Yet, how the brain processes and identifies odors\u2014and how this information influences behavior\u2014remains largely an enigma.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 1px #006699 solid;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2114-Tatyana-Sharpee_A2A9305e.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Tatyana Sharpee of Salk&#8217;s Computational Neurobiology Laboratory<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2114-Tatyana-Sharpee_A2A9305e.jpg\">Click here<\/a> for a high-resolution image.<\/p>\n<p>\nImage: Courtesy of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, Salk Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/faculty\/sharpee.html\/\">Tatyana Sharpee<\/a> has been tapped by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Science Foundation<\/a> (NSF) to help solve this mystery, and advance our broader understanding of the brain. Sharpee conducts research in Salk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/zh\/faculty\/computational_neurobiology_laboratory.html\/\">\u8ba1\u7b97\u795e\u7ecf\u751f\u7269\u5b66\u5b9e\u9a8c\u5ba4<\/a> and holds the  Institute\u2019s Helen McLoraine Developmental Chair.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNSF has awarded more than $15 million for three projects that will research the intricacies of olfaction. These awards support Sharpee and 16 other researchers who combined innovative ideas\u2014from multiple disciplines\u2014into collaborative projects, all designed to transform our understanding of neural coding of odors.\n <\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cOlfaction is both an important and tractable problem in neuroscience,\u201d said James Olds, assistant director of NSF\u2019s Biological Sciences Directorate. \u201cBy using the olfactory system, which is an ancient system, as a model for neural circuits, we can gain insights into the fundamental principles underlying neural activity and complex behaviors.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSharpee will be part of a team using natural odor stimuli to crack the olfactory code and will receive $492,500 in support for her research on the project. Natural stimuli make it possible to probe responses deep within the neural circuits, but require sophisticated statistical methods for their analysis. Sharpee and her group are developing such statistical methods.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nShe will join the team of three experimental groups who study olfaction in bees, flies and fly larvae. These insects use odors to make decisions in what are often life-threatening situations. For example, bees use odors to determine if a flower has pollen when deciding whether to land on the flower. This decision can be dangerous to the bee, as spiders that prey on bees often hide underneath flowers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nStatistical analyses of odors emitted by flowers and a bee\u2019s neural responses to these signals will help us understand the basic principles of how odors are represented in the brain. Further, understanding how odors guide behaviors of bees and flies has important applications in agriculture.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn addition to Sharpee, the principal investigators on the project are: Brian Smith, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona State University<\/a>; Aravinthan Samuel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard University<\/a>; and Elizabeth Hong, <a href=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">California Institute of Technology<\/a><\/a>.\n <\/p>\n<p>\nThe awards expand NSF&#8217;s investments in the President&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/braininitiative.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">BRAIN Initiative<\/a>.
