This event helped raise awareness and broaden opportunities for mentorship and support professional and academic growth. This year\u2019s event was moderated by Joshua Pratt, research assistant at the Salk Institute, and Ashley Medina, co-chairs of the BAS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong>Black in STEM 2025 speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0;\">\n<li>Karine A. Gibbs \u2013 Associate Professor, UC Berkeley<\/li>\n<li>Gentry N. Patrick \u2013 Professor, UC San Diego<\/li>\n<li>Quinton Smith \u2013 Assistant Professor, UC Irvine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"2024\" class=\"tab-pane\" role=\"tabpanel\">\n<div>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/black-in-stem1.jpg\" alt=\"Black In STEM 2024 Panel\" style=\"width: 100%; margin-bottom: 20px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On February 28, 2024, the Black Association at Salk (BAS) affinity group hosted the second annual Black in STEM event inviting outstanding scientists from across disciplines to discuss their research and work to raise awareness and broaden opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and academic support. This year\u2019s event was moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.salk.edu\/winter-2020\/austin-coley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Coley<\/a>, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute (2019-2023) and founding co-chair of the BAS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong>Black in STEM 2024 speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0;\">\n<li>Kevin Cox \u2013 Assistant Professor, Washington University<\/li>\n<li>Eric Archer \u2013 Program Lead for Marine Mammal Genetics Program at the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center <\/li>\n<li>Charises Nicole Winston \u2013 Assistant Professor, Keck School of Medicine of USC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"2023\" class=\"tab-pane\" role=\"tabpanel\">\n<div>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/23-black-in-stem-speakers.jpg\" alt=\"Black In STEM 2023 Panel\" style=\"width: 100%; margin-bottom: 20px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On February 15, 2023, the Black Association at Salk (BAS) affinity group hosted the first of its kind, Black in STEM panel discussion bringing together outstanding researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackincancer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black in Cancer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinimmuno.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black in Immuno<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blackinneuro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black in Neuro<\/a> to discuss the issues faced by Black researchers and critical needs of this community.<\/p>\n<p>Each speaker shared their organization\u2019s dynamic work to raise awareness and broaden opportunities for mentorship, professional development and academic support.
