Lunch will be provided each day throughout the program and include networking sessions with Salk trainees, faculty, and staff. These funds must be used by the PhD student\u2019s home lab and can be used to purchase reagents, supplies, or recharges for shared facilities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The pilot funds cannot be used to support the salary of the student or other personnel, animal costs, or travel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-bottom: 30px;\">Salk Edge Program \u2013 Track Topics<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<strong>Genome editing in cancer<\/strong> <a class=\"btn -toggle -readmore\" href=\"#\" data-reveal=\"self\" data-toggle=\"Details\u00bb, Close\">Details\u00bb<\/a>\r\n<div class=\"entries\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n<div class=\"entry\"><p>In the last decade genome editing using CRISPR\/Cas9 technologies has become a powerful perturbation technique that is used across nearly all fields of biology. During this two-week, hands-on session at The Salk Institute, students will learn how to use different CRISPR\/Cas9 techniques to create genome-edited cell lines in culture. They will perform hands-on wet lab experimentation in cancer cells, while also being exposed to several other biological systems where genome editing is heavily used outside of cancer. The goal of this track is to train students to create their own knock-out cell lines applicable to their thesis project when they return to their home labs (with the help of a $1,000 pilot grant from Salk).<\/p><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Computational neuroscience<\/strong> <a class=\"btn -toggle -readmore\" href=\"#\" data-reveal=\"self\" data-toggle=\"Details\u00bb, Close\">Details\u00bb<\/a>\r\n<div class=\"entries\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n<div class=\"entry\"><p>The technology we use to study the brain has rapidly evolved in the past years, now producing a deluge of neural and behavioral data over the course of a typical experiment. This consequently creates a need for new computational methods to analyze large-scale and high-dimensional data. During this two-week, hands-on session at The Salk Institute, students will learn how to use cutting-edge computer vision and deep learning tools commonly used in neuroscience. They will learn how to use these tools to analyze simultaneously recorded neural and behavioral data, while also being exposed to several other biological systems where computational biology is heavily used outside of neuroscience. The goal of this track is to train students in basic Python programming for scientific data analysis and how to use AI-based methods applicable to their thesis project when they return to their home labs (with the help of a $1,500 pilot grant from The Salk).<\/p><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Bioinformatics of immune cells<\/strong> <a class=\"btn -toggle -readmore\" href=\"#\" data-reveal=\"self\" data-toggle=\"Details\u00bb, Close\">Details\u00bb<\/a>\r\n<div class=\"entries\" style=\"display: none;\">\r\n<div class=\"entry\"><p>RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics have revealed immense changes in expression across biological systems. During this two-week, hands-on session at The Salk Institute, students will learn how to analyze transcriptional expression data from RNA-seq analysis of different immune cell populations using bioinformatics. They will perform flow-cytometry-based sorting of immune cells, RNA-sequencing library preparation, and bioinformatic analyses while also being exposed to several other biological systems where bioinformatics is heavily used outside of immunology. The goal of this track is to train students to run bulk RNA-sequencing sample preparation and analyses on samples applicable to their thesis project when they return to their home labs (with the help of a $1,500 pilot grant from The Salk).<\/p><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<!--\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2>Promoting the value of a diverse workforce and fostering an inclusive community at Salk<\/h2>\r\n<p>The value of a diverse work force has been documented across sectors, from business to medicine, and this is especially true in academic science. Despite this realization, Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and other peoples of color (BIPOC) have been historically under-represented and actively over-excluded in academia. Since the murder of Mr. George Floyd (2020), there has been a concerted push to increase representation in STEM, although the challenge still feels insurmountable. The US population consists of roughly 34% Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous populations combined. In 2019 about 24% of the STEM related undergraduate degrees were awarded to BIPOC students. The NSF reported in 2017 that approximately 23% of doctoral degrees were earned by Black and Hispanic students. In 2016 it was reported that 15% of post-doctoral candidates in the US were from underrepresented groups. And in 2020, there were just 6.3% of faculty in basic science departments identified as a URM researcher*<sup>1-3<\/sup>. The downward trend of these numbers along the academic career tract indicates a leaky pipeline.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Edge program promotes inclusivity at Salk, while also training diverse talent for the scientific community at large. The program also includes mechanisms to promote the Salk Institute and the amazing science and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts, taking place year-round at Salk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Salk is composed of many brilliant scientists who are leading experts in their fields and in addition to trainees poised to become leaders in STEM, around the globe. A key component of the Salk Edge program is its unique focus on fostering near-peer mentorship opportunities, which are extremely important both in academia and within other industries. Senior mentors are important, but near-peer mentors are equally instrumental. These near-peer mentors can provide insight and opportunities as the trainee pursues their own career goals. Participants will also be given the opportunity to explore the greater San Diego area on their own time during evenings and weekends.
