Estas c\u00e9lulas cancerosas pueden reciclar sus nutrientes junto con mitocondrias que generan energ\u00eda para crecer en ambientes pobres en nutrientes, como los tumores s\u00f3lidos, utilizando un proceso llamado autofagia. En su laboratorio, Towers examina un mecanismo que permite a las c\u00e9lulas en los tumores replicarse r\u00e1pidamente y resistir tratamientos con f\u00e1rmacos contra el c\u00e1ncer que se dirigen a estas v\u00edas de autofagia. Mediante una combinaci\u00f3n de t\u00e9cnicas, su objetivo es identificar las mejores maneras de atacar las v\u00edas de reciclaje utilizadas por las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas.
