El 28 de octubre, el Instituto Salk honra los logros de nuestro fundador, Jonas Salk, en su 106\u00b0 cumplea\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\" style=\"\"><div class=\"col-md-12 col-md-push-0\"><div class=\"video-anchor\" id=\"video-zXdpO8F_9BI\"><\/div><div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"> <iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zXdpO8F_9BI?rel=0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><!-- .embed-responsive --><\/div><!-- .col-md-*size --><\/div><!-- .\/row -->\n<p>En 1955, la vacuna contra la polio de Salk trajo alivio a nivel mundial cuando se declar\u00f3 un \u00e9xito y ayud\u00f3 a poner fin al azote anual de las pandemias de polio. La vacuna de Salk transformar\u00eda a un m\u00e9dico-cient\u00edfico relativamente desconocido en un h\u00e9roe cient\u00edfico, y fue celebrado en todo el mundo. Su trabajo cambi\u00f3 el curso de la historia, ayudando a poner fin al miedo causado por los devastadores brotes anuales de polio y dando al mundo la esperanza de que la ciencia podr\u00eda ser un baluarte contra las enfermedades infecciosas. El Instituto Salk ha puesto en marcha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/es\/science\/research\/coronavirus-research\/\">11 nuevos proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n<\/a> para comprender mejor la ciencia b\u00e1sica que rodea al virus SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) y la infecci\u00f3n por COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Y los cient\u00edficos de Salk, siguiendo los pasos del fundador del Instituto, contin\u00faan liderando la forma de realizar descubrimientos innovadores en envejecimiento, c\u00e1ncer, gen\u00e9tica, inmunolog\u00eda, neurociencia y biolog\u00eda vegetal. En particular, tres iniciativas de investigaci\u00f3n de Salk est\u00e1n ampliando los l\u00edmites de la exploraci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica:<\/p>\n<p>El <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/es\/harnessing-plants-initiative\/\">Iniciativa de Aprovechamiento de Plantas<\/a> es un enfoque innovador, escalable y audaz para combatir el cambio clim\u00e1tico, al optimizar la capacidad natural de una planta para capturar y almacenar carbono, as\u00ed como para adaptarse a diversas condiciones clim\u00e1ticas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/es\/conquering-cancer-initiative\/\">Iniciativa \u00abVencer al c\u00e1ncer\u00bb<\/a> es una iniciativa cient\u00edfica y filantr\u00f3pica cuyo objetivo es reunir a cient\u00edficos para que colaboren en el desarrollo de nuevas estrategias contra cinco tipos de c\u00e1ncer mortales: el de p\u00e1ncreas, el de ovario, el de pulm\u00f3n, el de cerebro (glioblastoma) y el de mama triple negativo. Y el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salk.edu\/es\/science\/research\/aging-and-regenerative-medicine\/\">Iniciativa para la Optimizaci\u00f3n del Envejecimiento<\/a> utiliza un enfoque multidisciplinario para comprender los fundamentos del envejecimiento y c\u00f3mo las interacciones entre los principales sistemas del cuerpo contribuyen a las enfermedades relacionadas con la edad.<\/p>\n<p>Durante este per\u00edodo sin precedentes en la historia, las comunidades de todo el mundo est\u00e1n navegando los nuevos desaf\u00edos de la vida cotidiana con un reconocimiento y aprecio cada vez m\u00e1s profundos por el papel central que desempe\u00f1a la ciencia en la salud y el bienestar mundiales. Hoy, el Instituto Salk se erige como un recordatorio del poder de la ciencia para, en palabras de Jonas Salk, \u201cconvertir los sue\u00f1os en realidad\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Salk falleci\u00f3 en 1995, pero su fe en el poder transformador de la ciencia perdura a trav\u00e9s de los dedicados investigadores del Instituto y de todo el mundo. Gracias a sus incansables esfuerzos, la ciencia vuelve a ofrecer esperanza al mundo: esperanza de que se detenga la pandemia; esperanza de que la vida vuelva a la normalidad; esperanza de que la confianza en la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica sea la mejor estrategia de la humanidad.
