El receptor, llamado PPARd, se encontr\u00f3 que regula c\u00f3mo se utiliza la grasa y podr\u00eda se\u00f1alar el camino hacia nuevos tratamientos para la obesidad, as\u00ed como para sus mortales complicaciones m\u00e9dicas asociadas: diabetes tipo II, enfermedades cardiovasculares, hipertensi\u00f3n y aterosclerosis.<\/p>\n<p>Profesor <a href=\"\/es\/faculty\/evans.html\/\">Ronald M. Evans<\/a>, el titular de la C\u00e1tedra March of Dimes en Biolog\u00eda Celular y Molecular del Instituto Salk y miembro investigador del Instituto M\u00e9dico Howard Hughes, y su equipo descubrieron que la estimulaci\u00f3n de PPARd \u2014siglas del receptor activado por proliferadores de peroxisomas\u2014 agotaba los dep\u00f3sitos de grasa en ratones, mientras que los ratones deficientes en PPARd eran propensos a la obesidad.<\/p>\n<p>Se demostr\u00f3 que PPARd regula la tasa a la que la grasa se quema para producir calor o se utiliza para mantener las funciones celulares normales. Al explotar PPARd, esperamos dise\u00f1ar medicamentos que puedan controlar cu\u00e1nta grasa se almacena en el cuerpo\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El equipo descubri\u00f3 que los ratones con un gen PPARd activado pesaban aproximadamente un 20 por ciento menos que los ratones normales, a pesar de que ambos grupos recibieron la misma comida a la misma velocidad. Cuando los ratones cumplieron un a\u00f1o, la diferencia de peso se ampli\u00f3, siendo un 35 por ciento menos para los ratones con PPARd gen\u00e9ticamente activo.<\/p>\n<p>Al mismo tiempo, la activaci\u00f3n de PPARd protege a los ratones contra la obesidad inducida por la dieta. Los ratones que ten\u00edan el gen PPARd activo no mostraron un aumento de peso significativo durante un mes, a pesar de seguir una dieta alta en calor\u00edas y grasas. Los ratones sin el gen activo, sin embargo, se volvieron obesos.
