Sein Labor ist bekannt f\u00fcr die Entwicklung fortschrittlicher Ans\u00e4tze zur Untersuchung von Krebs in Lebendmodellen, wobei modernste Genom-Engineering- und funktionelle Screening-Strategien eingesetzt werden, um zu testen, welche genetischen Ver\u00e4nderungen die Krankheit wirklich vorantreiben und welche Schwachstellen genutzt werden k\u00f6nnen, um sie zu stoppen.<\/p>\n<p>In j\u00fcngerer Zeit hat Papagiannakopoulos\u2019 Forschung auf die Untersuchung ausgeweitet, wie Krebs das Gehirn und das periphere Nervensystem beeinflusst, um Tumorwachstum, Stoffwechsel und Immunreaktionen zu steuern, was zu schw\u00e4chenden Symptomen wie M\u00fcdigkeit, Appetitlosigkeit und Gewichtsverlust f\u00fchren kann. Er ist Teil des InteroCANCEption-Teams, das k\u00fcrzlich einen Cancer Grand Challenges Grant erhalten hat, um zu verstehen, wie Gehirn und Nervensystem Krebs im ganzen K\u00f6rper wahrnehmen und darauf reagieren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIch habe mich f\u00fcr Salk entschieden, weil es einer der seltenen Orte ist, an denen ambitionierte, von Neugier getriebene Wissenschaft die Kultur ist und Zusammenarbeit die Norm\u201d, sagt Papagiannakopoulos. \u201cDie M\u00f6glichkeit, einer Gemeinschaft beizutreten, die sich sowohl im Stoffwechsel als auch in der Immunologie auszeichnet, und zu einem NCI-Designated Cancer Center beizutragen, das auf grundlegenden Entdeckungen aufgebaut ist, ist unglaublich \u00fcberzeugend. In zwei k\u00fcrzlich ver\u00f6ffentlichten Studien in <em>Natur<\/em>, sein Team demonstrierte, dass die Blockade eines Proteins, das Krebszellen hilft, sich einem Selbstzerst\u00f6rungsprogramm namens Ferroptose zu entziehen, oder eines Proteins, das die Immunabwehr gegen Tumore abschw\u00e4cht, Lungen- und Bauchspeicheldr\u00fcsenkrebs bei M\u00e4usen deutlich reduzierte, was vielversprechende neue therapeutische Strategien aufzeigt.<\/p>\n<p>Papagiannakopoulos erwarb seinen BS in Molekulargenetik an der University of Sussex und seinen PhD in Molekular- und Zellbiologie an der UC Santa Barbara. Seine postdoktorale Ausbildung absolvierte er am MIT.
