LA JOLLA \u2013 Das Salk Institute hat mit Joan Jacobs am 6. Mai 2024 in La Jolla, Kalifornien, eine seiner gr\u00f6\u00dften F\u00f6rderinnen und eine der gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigsten Philanthropinnen von San Diego verloren. Sie war 91 Jahre alt.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nJoan Jacobs und ihr Ehemann Irwin ver\u00e4nderten die Philanthropie in San Diego mit ihren au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlichen Beitr\u00e4gen zur biomedizinischen Forschung, Kunst, Bildung, Interessenvertretung und zum Gesundheitswesen. \r\n\u201cMan kann die Geschichte von Salks Errungenschaften in den letzten 20 Jahren einfach nicht erz\u00e4hlen, ohne Joan und Irwin zu erw\u00e4hnen\u201d, sagt der Pr\u00e4sident von Salk. Gerald Joyce<\/a>. \u201cIch habe noch nie gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigere, bodenst\u00e4ndigere Menschen getroffen als die Familie Jacobs. Joan war eine dynamische Person, die ihre gro\u00dfe Erfahrung, Intelligenz und ihr Verm\u00f6gen nutzte, um das Leben unz\u00e4hliger Menschen in San Diego zu verbessern. Das Institut ist ihr zu Dank verpflichtet und wir werden weiterhin jeden Tag hart arbeiten, um gute Verwalter ihrer \u00fcberaus gro\u00dfen Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit zu sein.\u201d\r\n<\/p>

\r\nDie Beteiligung des Paares am Salk Institute begann im Jahr 2003, als Irwin dem Salk International Council beitrat, einer Gruppe von Fachleuten, die sich f\u00fcr die Wissenschaft des Salk Institute einsetzt. Nach seinem R\u00fcckzug von Qualcomm im Jahr 2006 wurde Irwin Vorsitzender des Board of Trustees des Salk Institute, ein Amt, das er bis 2016 innehatte. Er blieb bis 2023 als Treuh\u00e4nder t\u00e4tig. In Fortsetzung der Familientradition der Unterst\u00fctzung des Instituts ist Joan und Irwins Schwiegertochter Amy Jacobs nun Mitglied des Salk Board.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nIn seiner Rolle als Vorstandsvorsitzender leitete Irwin die erste Kapitalbeschaffungskampagne des Salk Institute, die $360 Millionen f\u00fcr das Institut einbrachte. Im Jahr 2008 gr\u00fcndeten er und Joan die Joan Klein und Irwin Mark Jacobs Senior Wissenschaftler-Stiftungsherausforderung<\/a>, sponsert letztlich alle 20 Stiftungslehrst\u00fchle f\u00fcr Salk-Professoren. Dieses Ma\u00df an Unterst\u00fctzung stellte sicher, dass die Wissenschaftler des Salk Institute ihre k\u00fchne, lebensver\u00e4ndernde Forschung fortsetzen konnten, f\u00fcr die das Institut bekannt ist.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nNach der Stuhl-Challenge starteten Joan und Irwin Salk's Innovationsf\u00f6rderungsprogramm<\/a>, die pr\u00e4chtig, potenziell bahnbrechende Forschungsideen unterst\u00fctzt, die sonst nicht f\u00fcr eine traditionelle Forschungsf\u00f6rderung in Frage k\u00e4men. Im Laufe der Jahre hat das Programm Dutzende von Projekten unterst\u00fctzt und zu revolution\u00e4ren Entdeckungen in den Bereichen gesunde Alterung, Krebs, Neurowissenschaften und mehr gef\u00fchrt.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nNeben der Wissenschaft hat die Familie Jacobs in den vergangenen Jahren auch eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Unterst\u00fctzung der Kunst- und Musikszene San Diegos gespielt. Joan und Irwin waren feste Unterst\u00fctzer von Symphony at Salk, dem j\u00e4hrlichen \u201cKonzert unter den Sternen\u201d des Instituts, bei dem die San Diego Symphony mit einem Gastk\u00fcnstler im Salk Courtyard auftritt. Die diesj\u00e4hrige Veranstaltung am 17. August wird Joan gewidmet sein.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nInsgesamt haben Joan und Irwin Jacobs mehr als $102 Millionen zur Unterst\u00fctzung der lebensver\u00e4ndernden Entdeckungen des Salk Institute und der Menschen, die sie erm\u00f6glichen, gespendet.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nGeboren am 18. Januar 1933, wuchs Joan in New York City auf, wo sie die Barnard School for Girls besuchte und abschloss. Sie erwarb 1954 einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Ern\u00e4hrungswissenschaften an der Cornell University, im selben Jahr heiratete sie Irwin. Nach dem College arbeitete sie f\u00fcr die Groton Central Schools au\u00dferhalb von Ithaca, New York, und am Boston Lying-in Hospital (heute Brigham and Women's Hospital), einem der ersten Geburtskliniken des Landes.\r\n<\/p>

\r\n1966 zog die Familie Jacobs nach La Jolla. Ein Besuch in San Diego im Vorjahr, bei dem das Paar das neu errichtete Salk Institute erstmals besuchte, war der Ausl\u00f6ser f\u00fcr ihren Umzug an die Westk\u00fcste. Im folgenden Jahr waren die N\u00e4he zu Salk und die M\u00f6glichkeit f\u00fcr Irwin, an der neuen Universit\u00e4t auf der anderen Stra\u00dfenseite \u2013 der UC San Diego \u2013 zu lehren, entscheidende Faktoren f\u00fcr die Entscheidung des Paares, von Boston nach La Jolla zu ziehen.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nIm Laufe der Jahre erhielt Joan zahlreiche Ehrungen f\u00fcr ihre Philanthropie und ihren guten Willen. 1995 erhielt sie den David K. Kroll Leadership Award f\u00fcr vorbildlichen Dienst, Hingabe und Engagement f\u00fcr das Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center von San Diego County. 2008 erhielt Joan die Ehrendoktorw\u00fcrde der Sch\u00f6nen K\u00fcnste von der University of Massachusetts. 2015 erhielt sie den Helen Bull Vandervort Award vom College of Human Ecology der Cornell University. Sie und Irwin erhielten 2018 die Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, und 2022 benannte die American Civil Liberties Union ihr historisches Verzeichnis von F\u00e4llen vor dem Obersten Gerichtshof nach Joan und Irwin Jacobs, beides langj\u00e4hrige Unterst\u00fctzer der ACLU.\r\n<\/p>
