Busch, Mitglied des Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory und des Integrative Biology Laboratory, erforscht die Wurzeln von Pflanzen, die f\u00fcr die Aufnahme von Wasser und N\u00e4hrstoffen aus dem Boden entscheidend sind. Busch ist einer von sechs Pflanzenbiologen des Salk-Instituts, die sich mit gro\u00dfem Engagement einer Initiative zur Bek\u00e4mpfung des Klimawandels verschrieben haben Initiative zur Nutzung von Pflanzen<\/a> (HPI), das darauf abzielt, Pflanzen zu optimieren, um einige der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zu bew\u00e4ltigen und gleichzeitig mehr Nahrung, Treibstoff und Fasern f\u00fcr eine wachsende Bev\u00f6lkerung bereitzustellen. Konkret deckt Busch Gene auf, die das Wurzelwachstum von Pflanzen pr\u00e4gen, um Pflanzen zu gr\u00f6\u00dferen, robusteren Wurzelsystemen zu verhelfen, die gr\u00f6\u00dfere Mengen Kohlenstoff in Form von Suberin (Kork) und anderen Polymeren enthalten und ihn l\u00e4nger im Boden speichern.<\/p>\n

Busch kombiniert modernste Techniken aus Genetik, Genomik, Bioinformatik und anderen Bereichen, um innovative Entdeckungen zu machen. Er hat mehrere neue genetische und molekulare Mechanismen identifiziert, die das Wurzelwachstum regulieren.
