The Salk Institute will open its doors to the community Saturday, April 11, for the third annual Erkunde Salk<\/a>, a once-a-year event featuring staff-guided lab tours, self-guided architectural tours, science booths and talks by eminent Salk researchers. Family friendly activities include a Kids\u2019 Discovery Zone, a mobile science lab with hands-on experiments and a virtual lab tour with a Q&A session for preteens interested in pursuing a career in science.\n<\/p>\n

\nWe invite you to Explore Salk<\/p>\n

\nNew to this year\u2019s Explore Salk is a small group, hands-on lab tour. This is a great opportunity for guests who want a more in-depth experience and the chance to ask questions of the researchers. There is a $25 materials fee per person and preregistration is required.\n<\/p>\n

\nA free general lab tour will give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at two laboratories where research is conducted in neuroscience, genetics, cell and plant biology and related disciplines. Participants for either lab tour must be 16 years of age or older.\n<\/p>\n

\nTwo science talks will be given during the second half of the day, the first by Saket Navlakha<\/a>, a Salk assistant professor, who will address \u201cHow Biology Solves Technology Problems.\u201d Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute<\/a>, chief academic officer at Scripps Health<\/a> and a professor of genomics at Das Scripps Research Institute<\/a>, will deliver a talk based on his most recent book, \u201cThe Patient Will See You Now: The Future of Medicine is in Your Hands.\u201d
