Evans<\/a>, Professor und Leiter des Labors f\u00fcr Genexpression des Salk Institute for Biological Studies wurde mit dem prestigetr\u00e4chtigen Harvey-Preis f\u00fcr menschliche Gesundheit vom Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israels f\u00fchrender Universit\u00e4t f\u00fcr Wissenschaft und Technologie, ausgezeichnet. <\/p>\n<p>Er wird geehrt f\u00fcr \u201cseine Entdeckung der Superfamilie von Genen, die Kernhormonrezeptoren kodieren, und die Aufkl\u00e4rung ihres universellen Wirkmechanismus, ein Prozess, der steuert, wie lipophile Hormone, Vitamine und Medikamente die Genexpression regulieren und praktisch jeden Entwicklungs- und Stoffwechselweg beeinflussen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Charles L. Bennett, Professor an der Abteilung f\u00fcr Physik und Astronomie der Johns Hopkins University, wird ebenfalls mit dem Harvey-Preis f\u00fcr Wissenschaft und Technologie f\u00fcr seinen Beitrag zur pr\u00e4zisen Bestimmung des Alters, der Zusammensetzung und der Kr\u00fcmmung des Universums ausgezeichnet. <\/p>\n<p>Der Preis, der 1972 vom verstorbenen Leo M. Harvey aus Los Angeles ins Leben gerufen wurde, zeichnet Durchbr\u00fcche in Wissenschaft und Technologie aus. Die Auszeichnung ist mit einem Preisgeld von $75.000 und der M\u00f6glichkeit verbunden, am Technion zu lehren.<\/p>\n<p>1985 entdeckte Dr. Evans, wie Cortisol, ein Steroidhormon, das den Zuckerstoffwechsel reguliert, die Aktivit\u00e4t von Genen direkt steuert. Wissenschaftler wussten seit den fr\u00fchen 1900er Jahren, dass Hormone die Organphysiologie steuern, hatten aber keine Vorstellung davon, wie die vom K\u00f6rper produzierten winzigen Hormonmengen tats\u00e4chlich die Ver\u00e4nderungen ausl\u00f6sten. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans' bahnbrechende Entdeckung des Steroidrezeptors lieferte den dringend ben\u00f6tigten Code, um zu entschl\u00fcsseln, wie Hormone Gene steuern, und schuf leistungsstarke neue Technologien zur Medikamentenentdeckung. Seitdem haben er und andere eine Familie von fast 50 verwandten Kernrezeptoren entdeckt, die als Ein-\/Aus-Schalter f\u00fcr Gene fungieren. <\/p>\n<p>Da nukle\u00e4re Rezeptoren eine solche physiologische Macht aus\u00fcben, hat ihre Entdeckung unser Verst\u00e4ndnis von menschlichen Krankheiten grundlegend ver\u00e4ndert und bringt bereits Vorteile in neuen Medikamenten gegen Krebs, Entz\u00fcndungen, Osteoporose, Typ-2-Diabetes, Fettleibigkeit und Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans wurde in Los Angeles geboren und ist dort aufgewachsen. Er erwarb seinen Bachelor-Abschluss in Bakteriologie und seinen Doktortitel in Mikrobiologie und Immunologie an der University of California, Los Angeles. Nach Abschluss eines Postdoc-Forschungsstipendiums an der Rockefeller University in New York wurde er an das Salk Institute in La Jolla berufen. Dr. Evans ist seit 1978 Mitglied des Salk Institute, ist ein Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator und hat den March of Dimes Chair f\u00fcr Entwicklungs- und Molekularbiologie am Salk Institute inne. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans ist Empf\u00e4nger zahlreicher Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen, darunter in diesem Jahr der Gairdner Award, Kanadas wichtigster Wissenschaftspreis, und 2004 die Grande M\u00e9daille d\u2019Or (Gro\u00dfe Goldmedaille), die h\u00f6chste wissenschaftliche Auszeichnung Frankreichs. Im Herbst 2004 teilte er sich den Lasker Award f\u00fcr grundlegende medizinische Forschung mit zwei anderen Wissenschaftlern.
