Initiatives

A variety of learning and development opportunities are offered that are designed to promote inclusive excellence at both the individual and organizational level.

Mentoring

With mentoring proven to be an effective, evidence-based strategy for advancing underrepresented minorities in STEM, our programs aim to connect mentors and mentees with professional development opportunities and an enhanced support network.

At least twice each year, in collaboration with the Chief Science Officer (CSO) and Postdoctoral Offices, we offer interactive, cohort-based training seminars developed from research conducted at the University of Wisconsin and funded by the NIH. We are actively expanding this offering to include more scientists at Salk for whom mentoring is a critical aspect of their roles.

Salk’s Alumni Mentoring Program launched with a pilot cohort in 2021 and continues thanks to a broad and diverse pool of mentors through Institute alumni. The vast array of experience available through this mentor pool offers postdoc mentees a unique opportunity to develop new skills, approaches, networks and greater confidence as they prepare to take the next step in their careers.

National Academies of Science, Engineering & Medicine Action Collaborative on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

Salk is proud to be a member of this limited-entity collaborative, which “brings together leaders from over 60 academic and research institutions and key stakeholders to work toward targeted, collective action on addressing and preventing sexual harassment across all disciplines and among all people in higher education. The Action Collaborative creates an active space where colleges, universities, and other research and training institutions will identify, research, develop, and implement efforts that move beyond basic legal compliance to evidence-based policies and practices for addressing and preventing all forms of sexual harassment and promoting a campus climate of civility and respect.”

Salk Discussion Circle

The Discussion Circle is a quarterly event where interested members of the Salk community come together, select materials, and then share ideas and opinions in a space free of judgment. The books and films discussed span a variety of genres, all connected by the common thread of encouraging thoughtful consideration of diverse subjects and themes.

Self-Guided and Informal Group Learning

The provision of timely and readily accessible learning opportunities will remain an ongoing initiative of our office. To this end, we identify, evaluate and implement resources to increase awareness and understanding of relevant topics. We are mindful of offering a variety of formats to accommodate diverse learning styles, interests and scheduling demands.
