Strategic Funds

Since its inception, the Salk Institute's mission has been to dream big and step out of the box. New and innovative projects, often in collaboration with colleagues from other fields, have pointed the way to a number of exciting visions for the future.
The goal of the Strategic Funds Initiative is to provide the means to get innovative, daring projects off the ground. Integrating diverse scientific approaches, developing and deploying new technologies, training the best young scientists and continuing support for innovative projects is essential to ensure that the Salk Institute will continue to lead and not follow.
The Innovation Fund enables Salk scientists to undertake the kind of innovative, risky projects that, when successful, open new horizons in biological research but are not funded through traditional mechanisms.
The Technology and Instrumentation Fund supports the acquisition, development, and implementation of cutting-edge technologies, which give scientists the tools to test their ideas in the lab.
The Collaboration and Visiting Scholars Fund fosters collaboration between scientists – one of the unique strengths of the Salk Institute. Getting scientists to talk to each other often sparks great ideas and disparate approaches can merge in unanticipated ways, yielding discoveries not possible with conventional research programs.
The Education and Advanced Training Fund invests in the future of science and medicine by training the brightest young students and post-graduate scientists. It also underwrites a successful seminar series that brings new ideas from around the world to the Salk to invigorate science at the Institute.
Endowed Faculty Chairs provide salary support for Salk's outstanding faculty to ensure the academic leadership of the Institute. This will allow faculty members to utilize shrinking resources from the federal government directly for experiments and key personnel support.
