Leadership Challenge
To assure its ongoing position of scientific leadership, the Salk Institute has made the creation of endowed chairs a top priority. The urgency of the need has inspired Joan and Irwin Jacobs to step forward with a $10 million challenge grant to encourage donors to establish 10 endowed chairs for senior scientists. For each $2 million a donor contributes toward an endowed chair at the Institute, The Joan Klein Jacobs and Irwin Mark Jacobs Senior Scientist Endowed Chair Challenge will add $1 million to achieve the $3 million funding level required to fully endow a chair for a Salk senior scientist. The principal will remain invested in perpetuity, with a portion of the yield flexibly supporting the chair holder's salary, equipment, core laboratory needs, and/or other needs, and the balance reinvested to continue growing the endowment as a hedge against inflation and the volatility of market conditions.
The Joan Klein Jacobs and Irwin Mark Jacobs Senior Scientist Endowed Chair Challenge Will:
- Allow each $2 million donor to work with Institute leadership to choose the scientific area the chair will benefit.
- Enable the donor to name the chair, which means the chair will bear the name of his or her choice in perpetuity.
- Provide an extraordinary opportunity for donors to create and name Salk Institute Senior Scientist Chairs for a significantly smaller investment than usual.
Your Gift to The Joan Klein Jacobs and Irwin Mark Jacobs Senior Scientist Endowed Chair Challenge Supports:
- Senior scientists with flexible financial resources to help fund salaries, laboratories and their research.
- Groundbreaking basic research that lays the foundation for new treatments and possibly cures for many human diseases.
- Salk's ability to retain some of the world's brightest senior scientists.
