Salk Institute invites community to join 5K walk and first ever open house with exclusive lab tours

SATURDAY, APRIL 13

LA JOLLA, CA—The Salk Institute is pleased to announce Step into Discovery, a day featuring the inaugural 5K Walk for Salk and Explore Salk, a free community open house offering behind-the-scenes tours of the world-renowned Institute.

The 5K Walk for Salk and Explore Salk commemorates more than five decades of seminal research that has led to life-changing discoveries and new therapies. This public event marks the recent launch of the Campaign for Salk, the Institute’s first major fundraising campaign to support scientific research.

Walk for Salk

The walk will begin inside the Salk’s iconic courtyard and lead participants through a scenic route along Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla. Proceeds from the walk will directly support research in the areas of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, healthy aging, diabetes, obesity and plant biology. The event will also benefit Salk’s education outreach program for students throughout San Diego.

The Walk for Salk is $35 per person, which includes breakfast, t-shirt, water bottle and backpack. Children under the age of 12 are free.

Explore Salk

In addition to the Walk for Salk, the Institute is opening its doors to the public for the first time to allow exclusive tours of the science labs and the opportunity to meet our acclaimed scientists. Self-guided architecture tours and science talks are also available to our guests throughout the day.

A health and wellness festival will be set up on the campus featuring family activities and a variety of vendor booths that include free health screenings from Scripps Health and Sharp Health.

Explore Salk is a free community event, however, registration for lab tours is required.
