Roland P. Riek
Associate Professor
Structural Biology Laboratory

Roland P. Riek, an associate professor in the structural biology laboratory and director of the NMR facility at the Salk, has been studying protein structures, particularly the events that occur when proteins misfold. Such misfolding problems can result in malfunctions in the cellular machinery, including Alzheimer's disease and transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, which includes the so-called "mad cow disease."
Riek also is collaborating on projects using NMR spectroscopy to determine the structure and dynamics of proteins and their interactions with other proteins. He also is working to solve the structure of prions.
