When does the campus open and close on April 11?
The campus will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m.
Will there be anywhere to get breakfast/lunch?
The Salk Café by CulinArt will have hot lunches and snacks available for purchase from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Also, the Happy Bean Café will have hot beverages for purchase from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
What is the difference between general lab tours and hands-on lab tours?
The general lab tours are approximately 65 minutes in duration during which the tour group will visit two labs for a short overview of the research conducted in each lab. The hands-on lab tours are also 65 minutes in duration during which a small group will visit one lab where everyone will have the opportunity to conduct a hands-on activity. The general lab tours are a great way for first-time visitors to have a glimpse into the research conducted at the Salk. The Hands-on lab tours provide a more in depth experience in the labs and are a great alternative for visitors wishing to learn more about the day-to-day operations in our Salk research facilities.
Where do I check in for my lab tour?
The lab tour check-in will open at 10:00 a.m. in the red brick courtyard (the first tour is at 10:30 a.m.), near the main entrance to the campus.
When do I check in for a lab tour? What can I take with me on the lab tour?
You may check in for your lab tour up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the tour. The lab tour registration desk is located near the main entrance of the Salk Institute campus. We do not allow large backpacks, food, and beverages (including bottled water) in the labs. Photography in the labs is not permitted.
Can I sign up for a lab tour on the day of the event?
The tours have sold out ahead of time the past two years and we anticipate this happening again this year. We suggest signing up for a lab tour in advance for a time that works best for you so you do not miss out on this great, behind-the-scenes opportunity.
Can I register for more than one lab tour?<
You can register for multiple lab tours as long as they are not back-to-back tours. For example if you sign up for an 11:00 a.m. tour, the earliest time you should sign up for another tour would be 12:30 p.m.
What if I do not know my guest's name ahead of time for the lab tour?
We ask that you send an email to email@example.com before the event date with your guest's name. Your guest’s ID will need to match the name on the lab tour registration list. All guest names must be confirmed by April 6. Guest reservations with names that have not been confirmed will be released after April 6.
Do I need to preregister for the talks?
There is no preregistration for the talks or the movie screening, however, seating is on a first come, first served basis in the auditorium. The only activities that require preregistration are the general lab tours, and the hands-on lab tours.
I want to go on a lab tour, but my child is under 16. What is there for us to do?
If you are unable to visit the labs, we will have four science booths open all day, which will be staffed by Salk scientists. The science booths will provide visitors the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Salk researchers. The Kids’ Discovery Zone will have multiple activities for kids to enjoy as well. The SciChats:LIVE - A Family Forum, scheduled for 10:45 a.m., is also a great interactive, family friendly discussion that will take place in the auditorium.
Where will the Kids’ Discovery Zone be?
The Kids’ Discovery Zone is located in the Grove, just inside the entrance to campus near the Happy Bean Café Coffee Cart. There will be a variety of free hands-on activities between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
