As part of the biannual Back to Basics program, doctors Joanne Chory and Joe Noel discussed their work in plant biology. Joanne demonstrated for the first time at the cellular level how plants seek to avoid shade; this information will help scientists develop plants to increase crop yield. Joe talked about his research on the "miracle tree" and its many beneficial characteristics; his team is just beginning to delve into how this plant provides so many salubrious results.
