President's Club Holiday Luncheon
More than 60 Salk President's Club members gathered at the Institute on December 6, 2012, for the annual Holiday Luncheon. The program featured a scientific presentation, "What Tumor Viruses Have Taught Us About Cancer," by distinguished Salk Cancer Center Director, Professor, Tony Hunter. Dr. Hunter described how his discovery, a key chemical reaction that controls cellular functions, has resulted in new cancer treatments and therapies in use today, including Gleevec used by thousands of patients to treat leukemia. President, William Brody outlined how the Campaign for Salk will provide Salk scientists with the necessary resources to continue making groundbreaking discoveries in light of declining federal funding. The Campaign's Cancer Initiative will provide our scientists with the latest imaging technology, faculty appointments, and post doctoral fellowships.

Ready, Set, Pink!
Bloomingdale's together with the Salk Institute and Breast Cancer Research Fund (BCRF), teamed up on October 25, 2012 to raise awareness for breast cancer. At the store's second annual Ready, Set, Pink! event at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, Salk scientist Geoffrey Wahl welcomed guests to a Fall Fashion Cocktail Reception.
Claire Johns from Geoff Wahl's Gene Expression Laboratory and Charisse Crenshaw from Joe Noel's Chemical Biology and Proteomics Laboratory were the scientist models who showed "From Lab Coat to Trench Coat" fashions.
Salk staff along with members of the Wahl Lab interacted with shoppers and guests, sharing the Institute's story and ways the community could help support breast cancer research.
Bloomingdale's selected Salk as the only research institution in San Diego to benefit from the proceeds raised from Ready, Set, Pink!
Back to Basics

Salk Women & Science
Women business and community leaders in San Diego gathered for the inaugural Salk Women & Science event. Guests had an opportunity to meet female faculty at the Salk Institute and hear about their groundbreaking research. The event's featured presentation was by Professor Vicki Lundblad on her laboratory's research on chromosomes in the yeast used to make bread and wine, which has led to unexpected insights about both aging and cancer.

Back to Basics

As part of the biannual Back to Basics program, doctors Joanne Chory and Joe Noel discussed their work in plant biology. Joanne Chory demonstrated for the first time at the cellular level how plants seek to avoid shade; this information will help scientists develop plants to increase crop yield. Joe Noel talked about his research on the "miracle tree" and its many beneficial characteristics.

SALKexCELLerators - Going Nuclear on Aging
Salkexcellerators enjoyed delicious fare from Pamplemousse Grille and learned first-hand about recent discoveries at Salk with professors, Jan Karlseder and Martin Hetzer speaking on Aging.
Karlseder, whose research focuses on understanding the functions of mammalian telomeres, spoke on "The Ends of Aging," explaining how telomeres—the protein-DNA complexes at the ends of linear chromosomes—are crucial in DNA replication, tumor suppression and aging. Hetzer followed with a talk titled "You're Only as Old as Your Proteins," about his discovery that certain proteins, called extremely long-lived proteins (ELLPs), found in neurons and other non-dividing cells, have a remarkably long lifespan.
