The Salk Experience
As members of the Salk family, our faculty and staff further the mission of a world-renowned research institute dedicated to improving human health.
The Salk's laboratories are led by 61 distinguished faculty. Each laboratory runs independently under the direction of a faculty member (principal investigator). Although not a degree-granting institution, the Salk Institute plays a major role in training scientists, including graduate students and postdoctoral trainees from around the world. Graduate students and postdocs work under the mentorship of faculty members and their research projects are supported by baccalaureate level technicians and undergraduate lab assistants.
Research laboratories rely on the Salk's infrastructure for resources and support. Maintenance technicians, animal husbandry personnel, and administrative support staff are among the many members of the Salk family who contribute to the world-class research conducted in our laboratories.
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, the Institute offers a warm, casual environment and employees enjoy a generous benefits program. Comprehensive support services are available, including an employee assistance program, on-campus fitness classes, mail services, and a cafeteria.
Social activities-ranging from the Society of Research Fellows monthly SalkFest to our annual family picnic to an annual holiday party-are among the ways in which we interact together as a community.
In addition to employment opportunities, the Salk provides outreach experiences for volunteers and interns who have an interest in biomedical related fields. These experiences help young people develop their technical abilities and gain practical training in a laboratory setting.
