The Ellen Potter Research Connections For Teachers Symposium
The inaugural Ellen Potter Research Connections for Teachers Symposium hosted by the Salk Education Outreach department on Saturday, October 29, attracted over 70 middle and high school teachers from across San Diego. Introduced by her long-time friend Dr. Peter Salk, Ellen was stunned when the symposium was dedicated in her name, in honor of her service to Education Outreach. An exciting trio of speakers – Dr. Ron Evans, Dr. Reuben Shaw and Dr. Patrick Hsu – gave talks which updated teachers on current research in Diabetes, Cancer and Gene Editing. Afterwards, teachers broke out into workshops which supported implementation of the talks into classroom practice; and delved into questioning pedagogy and NGSS standards. The symposium will be an annual event at the Salk Institute. Follow-up workshops to support classroom practice will be hosted in the spring.
